From: Paula_W Date: Monday, August 05, 2002 Time: 08:41 PM Comments: My bird is infatuated with me. It seems abnormal; it could be rated at the high end of a continuum of attachment. My daughter brought the bird home from her boyfriend's; who, upon returning to college, found that Polly wasn't receiving enough attention.Polly is a parrotlet. A beautiful, interactive bird, Polly (a thoroughly unoriginal name for a bird I thought) immediately switched allegiance from my daughter to me.It seems that she is a one-person bird. All others get a scolding, complete with ruffled feathers standing up, if they come near her. My husband gets a special kick out of the way she charges him if out of her cage. Polly has a mean bite, but only lightly pecks me when she wants something. With me she is completely the opposite. She coos and chirps in my ear; calls for me if I leave the room, expects to be able to see me and know where I am at all times. We have her cage on rollers. I take my bird with me around the house. I have grown quite attached to Polly. But I cannot pretend that this attachment is problem-free. Her loud chirps when she cannot see me are a problem when wanting to sleep at certain times. They are a problem for everyone in the house. The others in my family don't get the positive reinforcement that I do, but instead are scolded and threatened. When Puff visited recently, (Puff is a veterinarian), she suggested I get her a mate. I had thought about that too, so my husband called the pet shop. After some questioning, we were told that the commonly unoriginal Polly was actually a somewhat more interestingly - Paulie. No wonder he didn't want to go get a mate. The pet shop owner said that would have made it worse. And then I realized that not only had I inherited a bird from my daughter and her boyfriend, but a "mate", as parrotlets mate for life. This led to the stunning to the point of silly realization that what we have here is a case of: "Paul and Paula" paula
