My memory and visual images of him are still sharp even though several years have gone by since my childhood. Pinkie was a great friend to we children growing up in rural East Tennessee. He was an enchanting old black man who had a twinkle in is eyes, love for children, and a captivating style of story telling. Pinkie lived in an old weather beaten three room house amid a beautiful apple orchard. Pinkie's sources of income were from apple sales and plowing neighbor's gardens. He was poor by economic standards but rich in things that really count in life -- like a peaceful heart, love for his neighbor, a faith that sustained and blessed him, and a particular love for children. On many late afternoon and evenings we children would gather on his front porch and listen with complete attention to Pinkie's stories. He spinned stories from his childhood and teenage years; he told the stories carried down to him from family members, and ancient stories from Africia. Pinkie had a good moral to every story, and many of them dealt with a Christian teaching. When I graduated from high school I went off to college and then into a career in accounting and never returned to Kingsport to live. Some years later I made a visit to my old home place and to Pinkie's orchard. The old shack was barely standing, and next to it was a grave. I walked to it and read the inscription. It said "Here lies Pinkie, a lover of life and a true lover of children. Remember him through loving the children around you." Thank you Pinkie for the rich stories and the lessons of life given with such humility and love. May all who read this story give our children and the children around us the love they so much need.
