This poem about Charlie was written prior to learning of his most recent hospital stay,
THE FRIEND I NEVER MET I have a friend I never met, I never shook his hand, but I feel his presence, I've seen facsimiles of his face and heard his voice, But I cannot complete the picture in my mind's eye, Yet, I know I would easily pick him out of a crowd of ten thousand, He likes to be invisible, there but not there, like the wise old owl, Who sits high in his tree, eyes wide open, head turning 'round and 'round, Seeing all, hearing all, then swooping on silent wings to dispense his wisdom, With the crows all around diving and cackling to divert his course, But he pays no heed to the crows, the scavengers, Who lie and steal and produce a cacophony of nonsense, You say that this man is nothing, nothing more, Than a figment of my fertile imagination, a collage, constructed from bits and pieces gathered here and there, And I say he is real, as real as the sun that rises each day, And nurtures everything within its reach, And after all, everyone of us, man or woman, is nothing, Nothing more than a collage constructed of bits and pieces, By those that see us, all different and all the same, I have a friend I never met and he is here.
